Reflection of the First Four Weeks

こんにちは。
I chose to study Japanese because I want to visit the country through a study abroad trip, and ensure a better understanding of the culture in that experience. I have been exposed to some aspects of Japanese culture in my early life from food to shows to art to games, and those bits of the country have always stood out to me and been some of my favorite things. So for the past couple of years, it has been my ultimate goal to travel there since it feels like I have several connections there already and there is so much I am yet to discover that also align with what I enjoy. Additionally, I wanted to learn a new language outside of the romance languages and challenge myself to learn one with characters. Since a few Asian languages are similar to Japanese, I hope this can help me practice skills to also learn others.
I am excited to speak Japanese conversationally so that I can connect with the culture on an individual level. Already, it has been very exciting to learn hiragana characters because I had the absolute greatest feeling of accomplishment when I could read the menu when I had dinner at Ichi-ran ramen. It was a very random and small moment, but being able to understand a whole new set of symbols that were indecipherable before was a very good feeling. My friend was probably annoyed with me freaking out about how I could read a few characters throughout the whole dinner. Nonetheless, it was quite thrilling to actually use my learning in ~the real world~.
It was challenging to read and speak quickly in class, but trying to do so was helpful in immersing us into the language and eventually learn faster. It has been a long time since I was learning Spanish in high school and since then, language-learning was never one of my strong suits. With that in mind, I have never learned a language with an entirely different alphabet, so I was really surprised with how it was possible to do it so quickly. Throughout the course, I found that giving more effort than just required is really helpful in getting through the tough patches of new grammar and characters because the extra practice really helps me apply the knowledge speaking in class. I hope to speak more quickly and that the grammar becomes more natural overtime.

    1. That would be nice to watch Japanese shows and movies without subtitles. Maybe watching these could help our speaking abilities too.
